Lot details Registration No: KYL 984 Chassis No: 520481 Mot Expiry: June 2005
Postwar, under their new post-SS company name of Jaguar Cars Limited, three essentially pre-war designs of pushrod engine were used, the 1767cc four from Standard and Jaguar's own 2664cc 2.5-litre and 3485cc sixes, gearboxes were 4-speed synchromesh manual. Retarded by mechanical brakes and with beam axle, the MkIV was made until 1949 when replaced by the MkV.
Produced in saloon or drophead form, with 2664cc or 3485cc engine options, the superceded model's body was transformed by the improved forward vision and the addition of rear wheel covering spats. However, the most important improvements were to be found below the skin, with independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes, which transformed the car's driveability. The model really took off among the movers and shakers of the day.
This MkV saloon was originally purchased in 1949 from Henlys of London by the Duke of Bedford as an anniversary present for his wife. A well kept example in maroon with red interior, it is described by the vendor as being a smooth running motor car that is in very good shape throughout. These early Jaguars have a very period charm, thanks to making so many appearances in black and white movies where heroes and heroines usually drove them. To find one with such super aristocratic provenance is a bonus and therefore this car represents a gilt-edged opportunity to buy into the heritage of the late Sir William Lyons great marque. Early postwar Jags really don't come much better than this.
