Lot details Registration No: UB 9393 Chassis No: 9330 Mot Expiry: Feb 2004
The 1923 launched 12/50 did much to establish Alvis as one of the leading manufacturers of the day. Progressively developed by Chief Engineer Captain G T Smith Clarke, the model is now regarded as one of the definitive English sportscars of the Vintage period, providing 12/50owners with exceptional performance and impressive roadholding.
The September 1930 introduced 12/50 TJ employed a really sturdy 9ft 4.5ins long ladder chassis, leaf springs all round, cable-operated drum brakes and Marles steering box for much more accurate steering. With high revving overhead valve 1645cc four and crash box with righthand change, most variants were good for 75-80mph.
The owner of UB 9393 (a January 1932 made 12/50 TJ first owned by Mark Goulden of the Yorkshire Evening News) describes the Cross & Ellis coachbuilt steel body in Doctor's coupe style, which has been reframed in ash and well painted in maroon over black during a comprehensive refurbishment only recently completed, as being good and the restored chassis excellent. The interior is still partly original and average, whilst the hood frame, though supplied, does require a cover. The 11.8hp motor, fully rebuilt by G A Knights of Norwich, electrical equipment and 4-speed manual gearbox are reportedly all in excellent order. The road tax exempt disc is current until next March and the MOT will not need renewing until February. The car is listed on page 585 of 'The Vintage Alvis' by Hull & Johnson.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
