Throughout the early sixties enthusiasts around the world longed for a road going version of MV Agusta's Grand Prix four cylinder, eventually their dreams were (partially) answered with the unveiling of a four cylinder motorcycle bearing the famous MV badge at the 1965 Milan Motorcycle Show.
The specification promised much but also confounded enthusiasts. The engine was visually clearly derived from the Grand Prix fours and was endowed with twin overhead camshafts and four carburrettors, whilst the twin front disc brakes were at the cutting edge of motorcycle technology, but the presence of a shaft drive, the odd 600cc capacity and the awkward styling suggested a machine designed for touring. Folklore suggests that these steps were taken to ensure that the machine could not be used on the track.
Two examples were, however, privately converted for track use, one as a racing combination in Switzerland and the example offered as a solo machine by Swedish roadracer Sven "Esso" Gunnarsson..
The engine's capacity was reduced to qualify for the 500cc class and the shaft drive was replaced by a chain, four 26mm Amal Concentric carburettors were fitted and complimented by a four pipe exhuast system. A new, bespoke frame was built to house the power unit by Swedish sidecar racer Bertil Persson and was fitted with Rickman forks a "Motorway" fuel tank, Bill Jakeman fairing and a racing saddle. A Lockheed hydraulic front disc brake and a twin leading shoe Fontana rear brake retarded were laced to Borrani alloy rims.
According to Esso's wife, he never raced the machine due to a helmet conflict with the Swedish Federeation, although fellow Swede Borje Jansson did ride it to victory in one race. The machines only subsequent outting since 1969 was at the 1997 TT when Esso rode it in the parade.
