With Leonard Percy Lord now occupying the Managing Director's chair at Morris Motors and Sir William Morris increasingly occupying a back seat, a brand new Eight replaced the Morris Minor at the 1934 London Motor Show. The freshly styled model had a 918cc side-valve engine with three bearing crankshaft. Four body styles were offered; two or four door saloons, and two or four door tourers. During the model's five year, pre-WW2 production run a total of 218,000 Eights, 15 per cent of them open tourers, were made at the Cowley works.
From 1935, Series was added to the Eight model name; the cars made earlier, though essentially built to just the same specification, being regarded as pre-Series Eights. Series II Eights appeared from 1937 with Easyclean Pressed Steel road wheels and painted radiator shells. The successor for the Eight, the Alec Issigonis designed Morris Minor - still powered by the 1934 sidevalve engine - could not be launched until London's first postwar Motor Show in 1948.
Included with the 1936-manufactured Eight Series 1/E saloon being offered here are the original Morris guarantee, handbook and registration book, a photo of the first owner with his 'new' car, various old insurance policies and certificates and MOT certificates, and various receipts for work carried out. The vendor claims that the overall condition of the car, which has done a thought to be genuine 81,505 miles from new, is good with new tyres fitted.
