Lot details Registration No: ERW425C Chassis No: 7703409C Mot Expiry: July 2006
Introduced in 1958, the new 3 litre (P5) saloon was Rover's first monocoque design. Styled by David Bache, it was a handsome car with a well appointed and comfortable interior. Among the best selling British luxury cars of its day, it was subject to a programme of continual improvement. Equipped with independent torsion bar front suspension and a leaf sprung live rear axle it gained front disc brakes in 1960 (though drums were still employed at the rear). Powered by a torquey 2995cc, straight-six engine mated to a four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox, the P5 was reputedly capable of over 100mph.
Finished in green over light grey with fawn cloth / leather upholstery, this particular MKII example is described by the vendor as having a sound chassis with good engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Though, he does note the presence of some "minor cosmetic rust". In the present ownership since 1997 (and apparently with its previous keeper for a dozen years before that) it has been treated to "much restoration". Thus, its interior boasts new carpets and refurbished woodwork, while mechanically it has benefited from an engine overhaul and renewed ignition components. "Not converted for unleaded", this imposing Rover is believed but not warranted to have covered 69,300 miles from new. Retaining an original RF60 registration book, it is also offered for sale with workshop manual, parts catalogue, sundry minor spares, various MOTs dating back to 1988, current MOT certificate valid until July 7th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until 30th April 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
