Lot details

Registration No: OAS 571
Chassis No: 5954495
MOT: Exempt
Estimate: £6,000 - £8,000

Motor Car Location: West Sussex

  • Very original condition with a very original interior
  • Vendor describes the car as 'on the button'
  • Recent vinyl roof and part-exhaust system

Introduced in 1946 as a ‘big brother’ to the 1.5 litre RMA, the Riley RMB featured a larger 2.5 L (2443 cc) "Big Four" engine with twin SU carburettors, starting with 90 hp (67 kW) but increasing to 100 hp (75 kW) for 1948 with a 95 mph (153 km/h) top speed. Body-wise, the RMB was a lengthened RMA, with a wheelbase of 6.5 in (165 mm) longer and overall length a full 7 in (178 mm) longer, and was underpinned by the same advanced chassis design complete with independent torsion bar front suspension, rack and pinion steering and hydro-mechanical four-wheel drum brakes. The RMB was replaced by the RMF for 1952 after 6,900 examples had been made. A car tested by The Motor magazine in 1949 had a top speed of 90 mph (140 km/h) and could accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 16.8 seconds. A fuel consumption of 19.6 miles per imperial gallon was recorded. The test car cost £1224 including taxes.

Offered for sale by auction, here is an RM that presents in an original condition with a very original interior, showing some wear, but is ready to use. The interior could do with some improvement, although some restoration of the interior has previously been attempted by the previous elederly owner. Wearing pretty Mallard Green paint, there are one or two areas that could benefit from restoration of the metalwork, however, the overall bodywork is good. Recent work has included a new vinyl roof and part of the exhaust system; the silencer was not available to purchase during the pandemic. Bought by the vendor in May 2022, it possesses a regularly maintained engine, which is described as 'running well' at the time of consignment. The RMB has has lay unused due to the vendor's ownership of another RM. The vendor describes the car as 'on the button'.
