This is an ex-Mitsubishi team, Ralliart Europe built 1986 Starion Group A coupe to full international Group A specification. Claimed to be largely original, the Japanese rally car is presented as run by Safety Devices Motorsport Engineering for Flying Finn Pentti Airikkala and co-driver Rowan McNamee during the 1988 season to Cartel International and Welsh victories, Scottish fourth, Circuit of Ireland fifth and second place in the overall championship.
The 2-litre KKS engine, modified by Ralliart to full Group A 300bhp spec, was renewed circa 1995 and has only been run for around 1000 miles since. The gearbox by Xtrac with oil pump and cooler has a straight-cut top and is enclosed in a Mitsubishi casing, and again has been fully rebuilt. The car has rear-wheel drive with oil cooler protected Ralliart limited slip differential, Bilstein adjustable platform struts, rose-jointed suspension, AP Racing 4-piston calipers front and back, braided hoses and adjustable for bias brakes. It is said to have cost more than £150,000 to build - in the 1980s a huge amount of money!
A set of spare wheels and tyres are included, as is a video of period event/in-car footage, whilst a spares package is available from the vendor by separate negotiation. Featured in Motor Sport mag April 2003 and recorded in action on the Starion OC website, C196 LGP should be eligible for the Nov 2004 RAC Retro. Event photography by kind permission of LAT.
