Lot details Registration No: NPW302V Chassis No: 2W87K9N13335 Mot Expiry: May 2006
Restyled for the 1979 model year, the Pontiac Trans-Am gained a new, more aerodynamic beak, deeper chin spoiler and 'blacked out' rear lights together with a revamped 2+2 interior. Available with a choice of small- (301ci) or big-block (403ci Oldsmobile, 400ci Pontiac) V8 engines, its two-door monocoque chassis featured independent coil and wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and power assisted re-circulating ball steering. For many the ultimate late 1970s muscle car, the Trans-Am was deemed to handle better than the Corvette, Z28, Capri and Phoenix during a group test conducted by 'Car & Driver' in September 1979. Deeply politically incorrect in the face of contemporaneous Corporate Average Fuel Economy legislation, the big-block Firebirds did not survive the decade's end.
Finished in black with gold decals (a livery synonymous with Trans-Ams ever since the model's appearance in the 1977 film 'Smokey and The Bandit'), this particular left-hand drive example is powered by the Olds 403ci (6.6 litre) V8 mated to three-speed automatic transmission. Reportedly purchased in 2003 for £6,950, its red / black cloth-trimmed cabin boasts an updated CD stereo, remote locking and alarm system. Showing an unwarranted 91,000 miles on the odometer, it is offered for sale with current MOT certificate, road tax and history file (purchase invoice, sundry maintenance / work bills totalling approximately £4,750, eight previous MOT certificates etc). A slice of pure Americana, we are informed that this 'mean-and-moody' Pontiac will be driven to the sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
