Best known outside of their native Spain for their World Championship winning 50cc and 125cc lightweight racing motorcycles the origins of the Derbi company lay in the establishment of bicycle manufacturing and rental business established in 1922. The company entered the motorcycle market in the years following World War 2 and during the 1960's concentrated their efforts on the production of high quality lightweight motorcycles that were marketed around Europe. By 1976 production totalled 80,000 units a year ranging from 49cc minibikes to the 187.5cc 2002 GP as offered here.
The twin cylinder two stroke engine has dimensions 51.5mm x 45mm and is fed by two 24mm Dell'Orto carburettors, a six speed gearbox with a wet multi plate clutch was built in unit with the engine and a 12 volt electrical system was employed. Drum brakes were fitted front and rear although the SL variant was offered with a front disc brake. With a dry weight of 110 kg and a claimed 23 bhp at 7,600 rpm this sporty little machine was capable of a claimed 135 km/h.
The restored example offered is finished in a striking black and orange livery.
