The Triumph and Ariel motorcycle engineer Edward Turner designed the 2547cc V8 which first appeared under the GRP bonnet of the Daimler Dart in the spring of 1959, although answering an objection from Dodge who claimed to own the name, the new sportscar from Coventry was hastily renamed the SP250. The cam was set high between the cylinder blocks, operating inclined valves in hemispherical combustion chambers via short pushrods made out of duraluminum. The valve gear was similar to that employed in the Triumph Speed Twin motorcycle motor, though Turner's car engine was markedly oversquare.
Only 2645 of the rather oddly styled SP250 sportscar were made though before the model was axed. Fortunately, Turner's V8 work was not wasted and the same engine did soon power Daimler badged and trimmed MkII saloon bodyshell from owners Jaguar. Available with either automatic transmission or manual gearbox, such was the popularity of the very luxuriously appointed pop Daimler that some 17,000 of the 2.5-litre saloons were produced from 1962 until 1969.
The vendor of the 1965-manufactured example in green with green interior being offered here advises us that the overall conditon of the car is good, it has had only three previous, the original tool kit survives intact and the history on file is extensive. He believes the 79,000 miles indicated when entered for the sale to be the genuine total from new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
