Lot details Registration No: ADF 268 Chassis No: 543254 Mot Expiry: March 2005
Railtons were built at Cobham, Surrey, 1933-1940, the early cars employing US Terraplane chassis. The first Railtons were tourers, although soon drophead coupe and saloon versions were offered.
This Railton with 4-door upright saloon bodywork by Carbodies of Coventry was supplied new in June 1935 to Steeles Garages of Cheltenham. According to the Lancashire owner, the car had two owners prewar and a further two postwar, one in Scotland running the car 1945-1984.
The chassis is said to be in good condition, the black painted bodywork mellowed with age, the medium brown leather interior in good original condition with headlining replaced at some time. The 8-cylinder engine of 4168cc capacity is reportedly in reasonable order and, though the clutch sometimes sticks through lack of use, the 3-speed manual gearbox is otherwise good as is the electrical equipment.
