The fourth generation (R129 Series) of Mercedes-Benz's iconic SL models was launched at the Geneva Motorshow of 1989. It was a beautifully-engineered motorcar that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features. The specification included independent suspension all round (double wishbone at the front and a five link system at the rear), adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, integral roll-over bar and front air bags. A total of 213,089 R129s are understood to have been manufactured before the model was superseded by the R230 in 2001.
The right-hand drive R129 model on offer is an SL280 that's finished in Silver matched with Grey leather upholstery, and Blue electrically-operated mohair hood. The vendor views the bodywork and interior trim as "excellent" and the paintwork, engine and automatic transmission as "very good". The car comes complete with "full Mercedes-Benz dealer service history (2,779, 15,000, 22,000, 28,000, 33,000, 35,000, 37,900 - the last of which was carried out on May 16th this year)", factory supplied hard top, wind deflector, a selection of bills, three keys, 10 old MOTs and one valid until June 12th 2013. The odometer currently displays a total of 39,000 miles - a figure that would appear to be borne out by the car's extensive service history.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
