Lot details Registration No: AAS 474 Chassis No: TC5749 Mot Expiry: July 2010
Introduced in late 1945, the MG TC struck a chord with the buying public despite being almost wilfully old-fashioned. Boasting a wider cockpit than its TB predecessor, the new model was similarly based around a ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and nine-inch hydraulic drum brakes. With its dual-cowl dashboard, fold-flat windscreen, cutaway-doors, swept front / rear wings and rear-mounted spare wheel, the TC looked every inch the traditional sports car. Powered by the Abingdon marque's renowned XPAG 1250cc OHV four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed synchromesh manual gearbox, it was reputedly capable of 78mph. The last MG product to ride on nineteen-inch wire wheels, the TC attracted a strong following in the USA (especially among demobbed servicemen).
According to the T-Register's (www.tregister.org) production record search facility, this particular example - chassis number 'TC 5749' - was built on 16th June 1948. Reportedly an original right-hand drive car, the MG is understood to have spent time overseas before being treated to "extensively refurbished by Classic Restorations Ltd of Alyth, Perthshire". Finished in Light Blue over Dark Blue, the two-seater is also said to have had its replacement but correct-type XPAG engine thoroughly overhauled at the hands of Dundee-based Agra Engineering. To the interior, the blue-piped tan leather upholstery is complimented by dark blue carpets and silver-faced instruments. Riding on fresh wire wheels and sporting a new hood, `AAS 474' looks ready for a cameo role in a period drama or the awards parade at a classic car show which is perhaps unsurprising given that the cost of its refurbishment alone was reputedly £32,000. Worthy of close inspection, this stylish MG is offered for sale with a Heritage Certificate, details of all work done and MOT certificate valid until July 2010.
