Lot details Registration No: WM 1370 Chassis No: 5611 Mot Expiry: Dec 2007
Notable as the first six-cylinder Alvis, the 14.75 was introduced in 1927. Near identical to that of the immortal 12/50, its robust ladder-frame chassis was equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a freshly developed 1870cc OHV engine allied to four-speed manual transmission (complete with right-hand gearchange), the newcomer was reputedly capable of over 70mph. Forerunner to the legendary Silver Eagle and Speed 20 models, the 14.75 remained in production until 1929.
Finished in burgundy over black with brown leather upholstery, this particular example is reportedly the twenty-seventh 14.75 to have been assembled. Wearing three-quarter coupe coachwork by Carbodies, 'WM 1370' is believed but not warranted to have belonged to H.H. Timberlake, Automobile Engineers (Wigan) for the first fifty-eight years of its life. Able to seat accommodate at a push (three up front, two on the rear dickey seat), it benefits from a lined luggage locker, wind-up windows, spring-loaded quarter lights and West of England cloth lined hood. Thought to retain its original upholstery and instruments, recent work has apparently seen the Alvis treated to an engine overhaul, refurbished steering box and new artillery wheels / tyres. Nicely detailed, 'WM 1370' sports a nickel-plated radiator shell, H.H. Timberlake dashboard plaque, nearside-mounted spare wheel, Pratt's petrol can, luggage grid and generous door pockets. Listed in that revered tome 'The Vintage Alvis' by Hull and Johnson, this delightful 14.75 coupe is offered for sale with MOT certificate and historic class (free) road tax both valid until December 2007.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle rides on replacement wheels / tyres and not new ones as stated in the catalogue.
