Lot details Registration No: YF 5343 Chassis No: 68YC Mot Expiry: July 2004
With the car buying world severely depressed following the Armistice that marked the end of the Great War, Rolls-Royce were cautious about rushing through a replacement for their trusty Silver Ghost that had served them so well before the war and, indeed, since launch in 1906. For such was this model's fine reputation with discerning clients that annual Ghost production was greater during 1920 and 1924 than it had been prewar.
A new model took seven years to refine and perfect before the resultant Phantom took to the roads in 1925. The New Phantom, as it was initially known, was replaced by the 1929 Phantom II. The chassis was similar in design to that used for the Ghost, while the long stroke motor with 6-cylinders in two blocks of three and pushrod-operated overhead valves resembled that which powered the 1922-introduced R-R 20hp, though with twice the swept volume and of 7668cc capacity.
Records on file, which include full factory build details, show that chassis 68YC was originally supplied with enclosed cabriolet body by Royal coachbuilders Hooper in May 1927 to one Ronald Tree of 6 Audley St, London W1, followed by a G A Palfrey of Carlos Place in London's Mayfair from April 1930.
At some time fitted with the attractively proportioned 4-seater tourer bodywork it carries today, the car has been in current ownership for fourteen years, during which time it has only been driven around 9200 miles.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
