Lot details Registration No: 313 HYN Chassis No: SCC085912LHD13646 Mot Expiry: July 2004
Although first unveiled by Lotus as a prototype in 1972, the Esprit S1 with Giugiaro designed bodywork on a new backbone chassis with inboard rear bakes and Citroen transaxle did not go into production until 1975. The Esprit shared its Lotus-made 160bhp double overhead camshaft, 16-valve, 2-litre four with the Elite and Eclat. An Esprit S2, with even more performance, followed from 1978 - the last few being fitted with a more torquey 2.2-ltre engine, which was also fitted to both the 1981 launched normally aspirated Esprit S3 as well as the 210bhp S3 Turbo.
The vendor of this non-turbocharged Esprit, which first left the Hethel works in Norfolk in 1990, tells us that the coupe has been well maintained and comes with factory handbook, service book, full tool kit and workshop manual. The fixed head GRP bodywork with whale tail spoiler and glass sunroof is finished in red, the paintwork described as being generally in good condition. Tan leather interior, which though worn on the driver's side seems still to be original, electrically operated windows and alloy wheels complete the comprehensive spec.
As confirmed by the service records, the 97,000 miles displayed when entered for the sale is believed to be the genuine total mileage for 313 HYN from new. However, the normally-aspirated 2.2-litre 4-cylinder engine has been in receipt of a cambelt change about 8000 mile ago. Both MOT with the car and tax disc on the screen are current until July.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
