The sleek, Paul Bracq-penned, four-seater 6 Series Coupe was introduced in 1976 as a replacement for the aging CS and CSL models. Code named E24, the newcomer borrowed heavily from the contemporary E12 and E28 5 Series Saloons and was of unitary, all steel construction. At launch, the range comprised two models -the 630CS and 633CSi; the bodies for which were manufactured by Karmann prior to production being taken in-house. The more powerful 635CSi swelled the line-up in 1978. It was equipped with a SOHC 3453cc straight six engine, and standard equipment included a five-speed manual gearbox and a boot lid-mounted spoiler. Fully independent suspension via semi-trailing arms and coil springs was complimented by ventilated disc brakes and ZF worm and roller steering. In 1982 the model enjoyed a mild facelift, with improved interior and slightly modified exterior. Coincidentally, the range-topping 635CSi received a new engine of smaller bore and longer stroke, resulting in a capacity of 3430cc. This was mated to either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The power and torque remained unchanged at 218bhp and 224 lb ft respectively - sufficient to accelerate the big BMW to 60mph in around 7.6secs and on to a top speed of around 140mph. Production ceased in 1989 after some 86,216 examples of the 6 Series had been produced. The model was effectively succeeded by the dearer, more complex 8 Series, though BMW had originally intended to market the 6 and 8 Series cars alongside each other.
The 1987 right-hand drive Cinnabar Red 635CSi on offer has a black leather interior and automatic transmission. It has reportedly had four owners to date and comes complete with original handbooks, eight old MOTs, its BMW toolkit and some 20 plus service / repair invoices. We are told it was last serviced at 99,623 - the odometer now reads 106,000 miles. Evidently the service book boasts 17 service stamps - 16 by BMW dealers and one other. The vendor describes the car's coachwork, paintwork and interior trim as "very good" and the engine and gearbox as "good". Properly serviced, these beautifully made Bavarian expresses run and run and are a joy to own and drive.
