Percy Riley's 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder powered 12/4 was the Coventry manufacturer's new model for 1935 and was the largest 4-cyinder Riley since the 1920s. The engine had been re-engineered by designer Hugh Rose with three main bearings, though with camshaft layout retained. Six different styles of saloon bodywork were available on the 12/4 chassis as was a Lynx 4-seater tourer and a Sprite 2-seater sports. The hotter Sprite motor could also be specified for a speedier Lynx as well as the Kestrel saloon. Despite the fact that only 8000 or so 12/4s were made, a suprising number have survived, many as open-top specials like the good looking Riley Special being auctioned here today.
Having resided for several years in three Cumbrian Motor Museums, according to the vendor, this car is now ready to return to the open road. It drives very well, he says, with lovely 12/4 engine and gearbox, and should prove to be very reliable and therefore entirely suitable for the longer touring events. The chassis and bodywork are reportedly sound and solid, and the tyres fair, so the car should be ready for an MOT. According to the V5, the car was declared as having been originally manufactured in 1938 at the Riley works, whilst in the characterful form in which it is presented today it should be acceptable to the VSCC as being eligible for many of their events.
