Lot details Registration No: GF 6314 Chassis No: 23558 Mot Expiry: June 2006
Launched in 1927, the Singer 8hp Junior range was based around a sturdy ladder frame chassis equipped with leaf sprung suspension and drum brakes (fitted to all four wheels from 1928). A conventional 'light car' design in many respects the Junior was distinguished by its 848cc four-cylinder engine. A highly advanced unit that used an overhead camshaft to operate its valve gear, it formed the basis of a powerplant dynasty that stretched into the 1950s. Available in a variety of open and closed guises, arguably the most desirable Junior was the open 'Sports' version. Boasting boat-tailed bodywork and wire wheels, the new model was made famous in December 1928 (not long after its introduction), when E W Deeley Esq. used one to achieve 100 ascents and descents of a 1:4 section of Somerset's notorious Porlock Hill. Performed under the officiating eye of the Royal Automobile Club, this impressive feat earned the nimble Singer its 'Porlock' nickname.
Reportedly "rebuilt over two years from a basket case", this particular example is still in need of paint and interior trim. Variously described by the vendor as being in good (engine, four-speed manual gearbox) or very good (chassis, wheels / tyres) condition, it has been re-wired using 12volt electrics. Apparently "recreated to the correct dimensions", the replica rear section of its body is married to an original front. While GF 6314 currently wears cycle wings and a 1931 radiator, we understand that it "comes with original wings and recently acquired correct 1930 radiator". Said to have done "many miles this summer especially at the Singer Centenary in Coventry", it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until 28th June 2006 and historic class (free) road tax current until 31st July 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
