Having established a competition tradition with his pre-war SS100, post-war, William Lyons revived his marque's motor sporting reputation in 1951 when the disc-braked C-Type won the world's most prestigious sportscar race, the Le Mans 24-hours classic, the model repeating the success with a further win at the Sarthe circuit in 1953. Ever since, the C-Type, which was designed by former Bristol Aeroplane aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, has enjoyed iconic status with Jaguar enthusiasts.
Most of the mechanical and electrical components including most of the instrumentation and the running gear for this C-Type replica were sourced from a Jaguar Mk2 saloon of 1961 manufacture, a Copy Cat kit from Jim Marsland, later of Proteus, being employed for its early 1980s build. The Mk2's overdrive-equipped manual gearbox was retained, though the motor fitted is a later 4.2-litre Jaguar six-cylinder power unit with triple SU carbs and six-branch manifold.
The right-hand drive sports has two-door open sports bodywork made out of GRP, albeit with some crazing, finished in BRG, there being some minor damage to the driver's side, where the paintwork has been marked near the headlight, and to the bulkhead section also on the offside, whilst the under-bonnet area would benefit from some tidying. Leather covered bucket seats and carpets are green, wire wheels are fitted all round, side exhaust is in stainless steel and cooling is enhanced by Kenlow electric fan. We are told that it has been much enjoyed over the years.
