Lot details Registration No: LTR735F Chassis No: 6879 Mot Expiry: Nov 2003
The 330GT, a Pininfarina designed and bodied 2+2 coupe with 4-litre 12-cylinder engine and 4-speed synchromesh gearbox and Laycock electrically-operated overdrive, was first unveiled to the Ferrari buying public at the 1964 Brussels Motor Show. With three twin-choke Weber 40 DCZ/6 carbs, the 60 degree V12 developed 300 bhp at 7000 rpm and, with 8/34 rear axle ratio, the 330 could carry four lucky people and their luggage to 152 mph, by when the 12 was clocking 6400 rpm.
Forged wishbones, telescopic shockers, coil springs and an anti-roll bar were fitted at the front, while the axle was located by semi-elliptical leaf springs and radius arms, telescopic shock absorbers being mounted concentrically with small coil springs above the axle. Thanks to having disc brakes all round, a double master cylinder, two servos and reservoirs, separate systems to front and rear brakes, 100 mph to standstill could be done in 375 feet.
Chassis 6879 being auctioned was originally owned by Jimmy Stewart, the former racing driver and older brother of Sir Jackie Stewart. Inevitably, Scottish Ferrari franchisee Jimmy modified the engine so that his 330 would go even faster. Later, the car joined the collection of Ferrari fan Bobby McIntyre and, during 1989/90, was totally restored by Hexagon of Highgate, the rebuild costing over £70,000 and taking 2689 workshop hours. Mototechnic retuned the motor in 1992, while, from 1993, the car was exhibited for some time in the Midland Motor Museum at Bridgenorth.
The vendor rates the general condition of his MkI - body, Silver Grey paintwork, black leather interior, 12-cylinder engine, 4-speed transmission and Borrani wires - as still being good. Unusually, there are electric windows, a rich walnut veneer dash instead of the usual teak finish, together with a complimenting dark wood rimmed steering wheel to the correct pattern. The likely to be authentic total mileage driven since new was 75,706 when entered for the sale. The MOT Test certificate and tax disc will be current until next November. Great car, great condition, great provenance, and a righthand drive Ferrari. Don't miss it.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
