The DL200 (known as the GP200 in Great Britain) was the last of the great Lambretta scooters that rolled off Innocenti’s production line in Milan. Produced from January 1969 until April 1971 it is said a total of only 9350 DL/GP200’s were made. However, some examples have been found with later chassis numbers suggesting that there were more than official records state. It is well known that Lambretta Concessionaires and other larger dealers tried to secure as many of the Innocenti scooters as possible when the company was in the process of liquidation as there was still demand in the UK order books. Indeed, we know that possibly the very last batch (all non-battery versions in the ochre colour) did go to the UK from first-hand accounts. The previously known latest example in the UK was originally sold in Hornchurch, Essex. We have an even later one here, with chassis 259375, that was first registered nearby in Enfield, Middlesex on the 17th September 1971 and this is a very rare find indeed.

The DL200 (known as the GP200 in the UK market) followed the SX200 and retained the engine prefix of SX200 before the serial number. There were, however, significant improvements to the engine over the SX including: improved crankshaft, a complete overhaul of the gearbox ratios and improved Ducati ignition. The iconic bodywork followed the trends of the day of the early 1970s. The Bertone design was more streamlined than its predecessors with a new 22/2 frame and rectangular headlight.

The vendor purchased the scooter in London in 1988, where it was advertised for £200 in the ‘London Loot’. The original cutting of the newspaper advert is still with the scooter as is the handwritten receipt. The tax disc on the scooter at the time from 1987 is also still with the scooter. He then restored it himself, at his leisure, between 1992 and 1995. Everything original on the scooter was retained where it could be. We observed original panels and almost all parts were as standard as they should be, including the rare later plastic parts. We noted some exceptions. The exhaust is a magnificent large bore original Ancillotti, still in its orange paint. Original parts modified include: the original Giuliari seat but with a new cover, original barrel rebored for 70mm piston, carburettor changed for a 25mm. One of the rear running boards is an SX version but a correct original is sold with the scooter. It is possible that the cylinder and flywheel cowls were also changed. The electronic ignition is now 12v, but the extremely rare original Ducati 6v electronic flywheel is supplied with the scooter and could be reinstalled. The vendor does not recall changing the speedometer and we assume it is the original. The rectangular leg shield badge is a replacement and the original crankcase bolts replaced with studs have been retained and are also available with the scooter. The brake adjusters were also replaced with new versions. The vendor is trying to locate the original carburettor and if found it will be supplied with the scooter. However, small items around the scooter can all be easily put back to standard specification as the parts are relatively easy to find (remembering that in the 1990s restorations were not done to the stringent standards of today).

It is extremely fortunate that we are able to see the full vehicle history report supplied by the DVLA, including a copy of the original buff registration document from 1971 and the full record of the ownership changes throughout the scooter's life. We also have written notes of the owner’s names and can deduce that this is a very low ownership scooter, probably just 4. The scooter was added to Howard Chambers GP200 Electronic database. The scooter is also supplied with a substantial number of bills for parts used. This is a very rare opportunity for the most serious collector of Lambrettas. It could easily be put back to 100% original specification.
