Mot Expiry: April 2013

Released in the September of 1982, the Ford Sierra was a replacement for the ubiquitous Cortina and its German sibling, the Taunus. The aerodynamic styling was arguably ahead of its time and caused initial controversy - one eminent UK journalist nicknaming it the 'jelly mould'. Ford had the last laugh, however, with sales eventually reaching 1,299,993 units over the 11 years of production; making it Britain's 10th most popular car up to that time. Always quick to support the performance and motorsport markets, Ford introduced the be-winged XR4i in 1983 followed by the XR 4x4 in 1985 and the Sierra RS Cosworth in 1986. The latter was conceived to gain homologation for Group A touring car racing, but was then also pressed into service as a rally car on the demise of the Group B formula. As launched it was a three-door version of the Sierra equipped with: suitable go-faster bodykit including a sizeable high-mounted rear wing, uprated suspension and brakes, and was powered by a turbocharged version of Cosworth's DOHC 16-valve YAA engine. Dubbed the 'YBB', it produced 204bhp at 6,000rpm and 205lbft of torque at 4,500rpm - sufficient to accelerate the newcomer to 60mph in little over 6 seconds and on to a terminal speed of around 145mph. Out of the RS Cosworth grew the all-conquering RS500 Cosworth.

The right-hand drive Sierra RS Cosworth now offered is a 1986 model finished in Moonstone Blue. Its odometer currently displays 87,000 miles and the fast Ford is described by the vendor as "an original stunner in the best colour". It is being sold complete with all but one old MOT certificate dating back to 1993 and one valid until April next year. A model with a great race/rally pedigree, good examples of which are becoming ever harder to find.
