Lot details Registration No: K667JSA Chassis No: 1290602F052196 Mot Expiry: Feb 2004
The first Sport Leicht was largely conceived by Rudi Uhlenhaut, the legendary Daimler Benz engineering boffin, who developed one of the world's most enigmatic cars, the 1957 Gullwing. Discerning long distance 'Grand Tourers' wanted an SL of their own and the German manufacturer has been obliging them ever since. Indeed, each subsequent Merc SL has quickly become a classic in its own right.
By the 1980s, the SL were offered with different engines, the 2962cc 6-cylinder 300SL, the 4196cc V8 powered 420SL and the 4973cc 500SL, although, as ever, with relatively few changes to their appearance - more evolutionary than revolutionary.
This righthand drive 300SL left the Stuttgart factory in 1992 and comes with both hood and hardtop, providing a fortunate owner with the best of both worlds. According to the entrant, the roadster, which he describes as being a superb car, has only had two owners from new and comes with fully charted history. The open bodywork is said to be 100 per cent perfect and the metallic black paintwork very good. The grey hide interior is reportedly good, too, and both 3-litre 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual gearbox in very good order. The 49,804 miles displayed when entered for the sale is believed to be the genuine total mileage for this car from 1992, whilst the MOT test certificate will not need renewing until the end of February.
PLEASE NOTE: The brake pedal on this car has excess travel.
