Lot details Registration No: LXH 739 Chassis No: B152HR Mot Expiry: July 2007
Introduced in 1946, the MKVI was Bentley's first post-war model. Aimed at the emerging 'owner-driver' luxury car market, it was closely based on the 1939 MKV (of which only fifteen were produced). Built around a massive cruciform braced chassis with independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, it was fitted with a freshly developed 4257cc oise straight six engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Capable of over 100mph when clad in the factory's understated 'standard steel saloon' coachwork, the MKVI quickly developed a reputation as a well-appointed, spacious sports saloon. However, despite the excellence of the 'basic' car, there remained a core of Bentley enthusiasts who found its styling too anonymous.
One of only 832 4.25 litre MKVIs reputedly fitted with coachbuilt bodies, this wonderfully elegant all-alloy four-door saloon is the work of James Young. Ordered new by Jack Barclay Ltd for J.R. Swanston of the Colnbrook Trading Company, Buckinghamshire, chassis B152HR was supplied locally via Weybridge Autos Ltd of Queen's Road, Colnbrook. Boasting a number of special features including a fuel-filler lock, internal bonnet release levers, extra ashtrays and Silver Dawn / Bentley export foglamps, it also benefits from picnic trays, reading lights, grab handles and electric front windows (the rear ones being manually operated). Cracked and lifting in places, its maroon paintwork is offset by similarly weathered beige leather upholstery (believed to be original). Starting readily upon inspection, B152HR has apparently been treated to a "recent clutch, fuel pumps and brake servo overhaul". Seemingly sound underneath, the car comes equipped with four-speed manual transmission, bespoke bumpers, four ventilation / horn grilles and a Bentley Driver's Club badge. Still bearing its original 'LXH 739' registration number, this characterful MKVI is accompanied by a history file, MOT certificate valid until July 26th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until July 31st 2006. Offered for sale entirely without reserve due to the vendor's impending emigration, coachbuilt Bentleys are rarely so affordable.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT and Road Fund Licence until July 2007.
