Lot details Registration No: C4 LCM Chassis No: WPOZZZ0962L5410398H Mot Expiry: Oct 2007
Introduced in August 1989, the 964-series was the most radically re-engineered Porsche 911 for a generation. Able to boast a drag co-efficient of 0.32, its specially smoothed sheetmetal incorporated a dual function rear spoiler that deployed at speeds above 77km/h. While, underneath the model broke new ground by employing all-round coil-sprung suspension (McPherson strut front / semi-trailing arm rear), power assisted rack and pinion steering and ABS disc brakes. The first 964-series variant to go on sale, the Carrera 4 featured a simplified version of the four-wheel drive system previously seen aboard the 959 supercar. Under normal circumstances, its epicyclic centre differential ensured that 31 per cent of the power went to the front wheels and 69 per cent to the rear ones. However, if any slippage was detected by the brake sensors then the car's computer-controlled but hydraulically-activated multi-disc clutch would intervene and balance power to traction. Deemed the "fastest A-B car in the world" by CAR magazine, the Carrera 4 combined finely balanced handling with limpet like roadholding. Though, with some 250bhp and 229lbft of torque on tap from its new 3.6 litre air-cooled flat-six, the Porsche was hardly short of straight line speed either (contemporary road testers achieving 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds and 161mph).
Finished in Baltic Blue metallic with Silk Grey leather upholstery (piped in Marine Blue), this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (bodywork, paintwork) or "very good" (engine, five-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, wheels / tyres) condition. Supplied new with the following options: Blaupunkt stereo, sports front seats (height-adjustable), rear wiper and amplifier, the Targa-roofed sportscar is reported to have covered some 101,000 miles from new - a figure apparently substantiated by "fantastic Porsche main agent and specialist service history (10 Porsche stamps, 4 specialist ones)" as well as "lots of old MOTs". Carrying the appropriate registration number 'C4 LCM' and said to "drive superbly", this tempting 911 is offered for sale with Porsche approved alarm (Cat.1) and MOT certificate valid until October 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
