Introduced in 1986, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) is still renowned for its engineering integrity and superb build quality. A monocoque chassis design equipped with beautifully balanced coil-sprung suspension (wishbone front / multi-link rear), nicely weighted power-assisted steering and responsive four-wheel disc brakes, it was propelled by a generous selection of petrol and diesel engines. Available in saloon, estate, coupe and convertible guises, the vast majority were specified with automatic transmission. An early flagship for the range, the 300CE exhibited notably sure-footed handling thanks to its forward-biased 53:47 weight distribution. Credited with 177bhp and 188lbft of torque, its 2962cc SOHC straight-six powerplant reputedly enabled the pillarless four-seater to accelerate from 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds and onto 137mph. Belying its performance potential, the two-door coupe was blessed with elegant yet understated styling and a cosseting interior.
Finished in grey with grey leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" overall condition. Said to have been "very well looked after" and to possess a "full service history with a stamped book and most bills", 'G929 FSJ' is understood to have covered 153,000 miles form new. Benefiting from alloy wheels and four-speed automatic transmission, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until November 27th 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
