In the early 1970s Volkswagen commissioned Porsche to design a front-engined GT. However, only late in its development did they decide to market the new pop-Porsche as a Porsche, the resultant 924 being hailed as the first front-engined, water-cooled Porsche, even though it was actually produced for them by Audi. Employing VW MacPherson strut front suspension and a 125bhp Volkswagen van engine, a 924 would do 0-62mph in 9.5sec and 124mph down the autobahn.
Thanks to new nose treatment and wider wheel-arches, the 1982-launched 944 had far more street presence, not to mention a 160bhp single overhead camshaft 2½-litre with twin counter-weighted balance shafts to overcome the vibration problem that can occur with a large capacity four. The 1985 launched 217bhp Turbo version of the 944 had 0-62mph in 5.7sec and 152mph capability.
This 944, a right-hand drive Series 2 model, was made in 1989. With a 107,553 mileage displayed on the odometer when entered for this sale, the current condition of the open bodywork is described by the entrant as being good with the white paintwork outstanding and the black hide interior lovely. The 2996cc four-cylinder motor, which has a reputation for being both powerful and torquey, is reportedly in good order as are the five-speed manual transmission and the electrical equipment. The latest MOT certificate will be valid until the end of July.
Perhaps the vendor's summation of this 944 most accurately encapsulates why you should seriously consider becoming the next owner - "a lovely and cherished Owner's Club displayed car with first class history."
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
