The first of many racers to be produced by March (an acronym of the names of the founders of the marque - Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd) was the 1969 Type 693 F3 in which the late and great Ronnie Peterson, one of the many famous drivers who raced one of the Bicester made single seaters, finished third overall in the marque's first race appearance. Ambitiously, a squad of STP-backed F1 March-Ford Cosworths for the factory team followed with customer orders being received in large numbers from all over the motor racing world for Formula Ford 1600, Formula Atlantic, F2 and even Can-Am. The March 'Old Boys' list reads like a who's-who of the sport and includes Sir Jackie Stewart, Nicki Lauda, John Watson, Jo Siffert, James Hunt and Derek Bell.
In 1977, two engineers from March constructed the very March-like, rear-engined monoposto racer being auctioned here today, being awarded the Eiganbau Trophy for private race car builders in period. Featuring many original March components, this single seater clearly has been superbly constructed, looking strong and, apparently, blessed with excellent handling. We are advised that the cosmetic and mechanical condition is all good, the car having seen very little use since being totally rebuilt. The engine is a Holbay tuned Ford 'Kent' 1.6-litre and the gearbox a Hewland Mk9. The PDS 77 Ford could be your entry ticket into historic racing or sprints and hill climbs.
Please note: We have not had this vehicle running.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
