The Bayerische Motoren Werke was incorporated in 1917, setting up in business to make aircraft engines, their now world famous logo being a representation of a rotating propeller. From 1921, however, they started producing their legendary horizontally-opposed, flat-twin engines for other manufacturers to fit to their bikes and, in 1923, produced their own complete motorcycles which were designed by aircraft engineer Max Fritz. By 1939, a supercharged BMW ridden by George Meier had won the toughest road-test of all, the Senior TT round the Isle of Man mountain circuit.
Following WW2, BMWs became the marque of choice for most of the leading sidecar racers on the Continental, whilst their shaft-driven road machines were lapped up by police forces and long distance 'Grand Tourers'.
We understand that the BMW offered here, a 1963-built machine in black, was originally an R69S - although, in 2000, the engine was replaced with a reconditioned R60 600cc power unit. Said to be complete and in working order, the well-built German just needs some general maintenance, says the vendor.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
