Lot details Registration No: BLE 689 Chassis No: 91TA Mot Expiry: Exempt
Last of the truly grand six-cylinder Rolls-Royces and indeed the final one to be overseen from start to finish by F. Henry Royce himself, the Phantom II was introduced at the October 1929 Olympia Motor Show. Powered by a 7668cc OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, just 1,394 were made from 1929-1935. According to its accompanying copy chassis cards, chassis 91TA was taken off test on 28th January 1935. Originally fitted with Enclosed Limousine coachwork by Barker, the Rolls-Royce was supplied new to Mrs H. Mappin (of the jewellers Mappin & Webb). Thereafter the Phantom II is known to have passed to Messrs W.A. Truelove & Son of Sutton, Surrey in 1947 and R.D. Kemble MD of Oahu, Hawaii some nineteen years later. Repatriated by marque specialist The Real Car Co during the late 1990s, it entered the current ownership shortly thereafter as a rolling chassis. Capable of moving under its own power, chassis 91TA was entrusted to restorer Trevor Farrington of Nantwich (now Allostock) with instructions that it be re-bodied as a Four-Seater Open Tourer. Finished in Black over Yellow with Black leather upholstery, the resultant coachwork has Brewster-esque overtones. Understood to have had attention paid to its cylinder head and blocks in the past, the original engine (number FJ15) is currently seized. It is not known whether the straight-six's immobility is due to stuck piston rings or something more sinister. The Rolls-Royce has not possessed a valid tax disc since 30th September 2002 and will require careful recommissioning / overhauling prior to road use. Unfortunately the vendor has lost the Phantom II's paperwork. However, a new UK V5C Registration Document has been applied for (which will be forwarded to the new owner) and the RREC have kindly provided some copy chassis cards. A potentially rewarding project, chassis 91TA has the makings of a very elegant motorcar.
