Launched at the 1966 Turin Show, first in Pininfarina-crafted open spyder form with a fixed-head coupe made by Bertone to follow, the Fiat Dino had its Ferrari-designed 2-litre 150bhp V6 ahead of the driver and not behind as with the mid-engined Ferrari prototype Dino Berlinetta GT, also unveiled at Turin. The Fiat Dinos had steel bodywork, 5-speed gearbox, independent front suspension, live rear axle and disc brakes for all four wheels.
To begin with, both Fiat and Ferrari versions of the Dino employed the same light alloy 4-cam 2-litre V6 which was related to the Dino 246 GP and Dino 166P sports-racer motors. The first Fiat Dinos of 1966 employed a 1987cc engine, which was increased in capacity to 2418cc from 1969 to 1972. The Dino V6 was actually conceived by the Maranello factory for use in a Ferrari F2 single-seater; the engine having to be derived from a minimum of 500-off production car power unit run.
This 1972-built and lefthand drive Fiat Dino, a 2.4-litre powered 2-door coupe, was previously motor museum owned and has been well restored. More recently, a stainless steel exhaust has been fitted and the carburettors rebuilt by a specialist. Currently, Bertone-styled fixed head bodywork, red paintwork, beige interior, 6-cylinder motor and 5-speed manual gearbox are all claimed to be in very good condition. Whilst the 56,600 kilometres displayed on the odometer when entered is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total from new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
