Further Info:
The first Triumph TR2 left the factory at Canley, Coventry in August 1953. For the first few months production was rather slow. Just 250 cars were assembled prior to 1954 of which only 50 found their way on to the home market. In January 1953 production increased and TR2s began to dominate the UK market. This was due to Triumph's determination that a reasonable proportion of the production would stay in the UK, whereas the likes of MG, Jaguar and Morgan were mainly exported to the USA. The early Triumph TR2s were snapped up by eager enthusiasts, enticed by the car's performance, low running costs and low price. Such was the success of the TR2 that in 1954 a car was entered in the famous Mille Miglia event where it came 28th out of 450 starters. Furthermore a TR2 was entered in the prestigious Le Mans 24 hour race of the same year and came 5th in class.
The example offered here today is an original UK RHD car, first registered in the November of 1954 and is the later 'short door' version. The TR2 has had just 4 owners since 1970. The car was acquired by the last owner some 10 years ago and has just emerged from a ten year extensive 'nut and bolt' 'body off' restoration. Accompanying the car is a full photographic record of the refurbishment together with the all important British Motor Industry Heritage Trust build certificate. During the restoration the car was treated to many new panels including wings, doors, floors, transmission tunnel, bulkhead and front and rear aprons etc. The TR also benefits from a complete new interior, including red leather trim, new carpets and a new Motalita wood steering wheel. The car was also treated to brand new weather equipment including hood, side screens and tonneau cover. The TR also comes with front disc brakes and new 60-spoke powder-coated wire wheels. Needless to say, during such a comprehensive body restoration, all brightwork was replaced including new bumpers front and rear, a new windscreen and surround and new lights front and rear etc.
The car is sold with an extensive history file, which contains an old style green log book dating from 1970, older TR register correspondence, a photographic record of the restoration and the aforementioned Heritage certificate. The odometer reads an unwarranted 74,271. The vendor describes the TR2 as being 'restored to a very high standard' with an 'as new' interior and detailed engine bay. A model with a great race / rally pedigree, good examples of which are becoming increasingly hard to find.
PLEASE NOTE: This lot does not come with a British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate as previously advertised.
