Lord Alexander Hesketh's Hesketh Motorcycles Limited was a brave, though sadly relatively short-lived attempt to revive the fortunes of British bike manufacturing. Although press-launched in 1980, the F1 team owner's first production superbikes did not leave his Daventry works until 1982. After less than 150 had been built, however, the Towcester peer's enterprise went into receivership.
Being sold here is a 1982-built V1000 with duplex tubular cradle frame and 992cc 90 degree v-twin 4-stroke with double overhead camshafts. The engine, which should be good for achieving 86bhp at 6500rom, was specially developed by Weslake for Hesketh. The gearbox had five ratios and Marzocchi supplied the forks. For a bike mag test report in period, a Hesketh V1000 was timed at 130.5mph!
The vendor tells us that he has owned his fine example since 1990. The condition of red and gold paintwork is reportedly very good and all the mechanical items are also claimed to be in very good order too. The 8723 miles displayed when entered is reckoned to be the genuine total mileage ridden from new.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
