Lot details Registration No: LGX 735 Chassis No: B247GT Mot Expiry: March 2006
Introduced in 1946, the MKVI was Bentley's first post-war model. Closely based on the 1939 MKV of which only fifteen were built, it featured a massive, cruciform braced frame with independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle. Fitted with a freshly developed 4257cc oise straight six engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, most versions of the MKVI chassis were capable of 100mph. However, as Bentley intended, the majority were clad in its new, 'standard steel saloon' coachwork. A relatively compact design, it nonetheless made for a well appointed, spacious sports saloon that appealed greatly to the important 'owner-driver' market.
Finished in black with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in average (paintwork, bodywork, interior trim) to good (chassis, engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, wheels / tyres) condition. Supplied new by Jack Barclay of London, it changed hands for the first time in 1982 when it was acquired by a past president of the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club. Purchased by the current, fourth owner from Frank Dale & Stepson, it is thought to retain its original paint, interior, underbonnet oilers and inspection lamp. Used to motor round Italy earlier this year, it is said to "drive nicely". Wearing new radial tyres which "have transformed the handling for long distance touring", other mechanical work has included a cooling system overhaul (new radiator matrix, rebuilt water pump), brake / servo refurbishment, spring / suspension fettling, rebuilt starter motor, new fuel pump and replacement rear body mountings. Further benefiting from a sun-roof, period radio, functional chassis lubrication system, leaf spring gaiters, re-plated radiator shell / Flying 'B' mascot and re-silvered headlights, it is considered to need attention to its seat cushions and wheel trims. Believed but not warranted to have covered 16,324 miles from new, it is offered for sale with history file (build sheet, buff logbook, sundry receipts etc), MOT certificate current until 20th March 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until 31st March 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
