One of the first manufacturers to successfully experiment with overhead valvegear, Buick was also the keystone on which William C Durant founded his General Motors Empire in 1908. Known for the quality and sophistication of its designs, the Flint-based concern produced some 115,176 cars in 1920. While, the following year's adoption of new construction techniques that allowed the tourers to dispense with their hitherto cumbersome secondary bulkheads saw demand boosted still further. Fielding a range of four- and six-cylinder equipped sedans and coupes alongside its more popular open models, Buick placed third behind Chevrolet and Ford in the 1923 sales charts with 201,572 leaving the factory. That same year was also notable for renowned writer / traveller Lowell Thomas' widely reported Buick-mounted expedition to Afghanistan and racing driver Joe Nikrent utilising a mildly tweaked Buick 6-54 to record 108.25mph during a high-speed dry lake run near Muroc, California. Asked to comment on the latter's antics, the company modestly replied that "Buick does not intend to again enter the racing game . . . this performance was just another little demonstration to call attention to the fact that the 1923 Buick is the greatest Buick ever built".
Finished in burgundy over black with black upholstery, this rather more pedestrian right-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "fair" (wheels / tyres) to "good" (three-speed manual transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork) condition. Powered by a 2.8 litre four-cylinder engine which is said to "possibly have a crack in the cylinder head", it is reported to have been first UK registered during August 1990. In the current ownership since June 1993, it was primarily used as a wedding car up until approximately eighteen months / two years ago. Dormant ever since, it is now in need of recommissioning. Riding on artillery style wooden wheels, it benefits from a split windscreen, generous running boards, drum-type headlamps and modern traffic indicators. A handsome vintage tourer, it is offered for sale with "vehicle history from 1990".
PLEASE NOTE: We have not had this vehicle running due to a flat battery.
