Torakusa Yamaha actually trained as a clockmaker before founding Nippon Gakki in 1897, his firm growing into one of the world's largest musical instrument manufacturers. In 1955, it was Nippon Gakki who established the Yamaha concern to build motorcycles, employing factory machinery that once had made aircraft pros for the Japanese WW2 effort. The first Yamaha was a 125cc two-stroke single-cylinder bike, the YA-1 or Red Dragonfly, based on a German DKW. The YD-1 twin followed in its wheel tracks from 1957. Yamahas were distinguished by having the company's tuning fork logo on their tanks.
This Yamaha Mini Moto, the ultimate paddock transport surely, was once the property of former professional race rider and now BBC Moto GP commentator Steve Parrish. Virtually a mini circuit racer in terms of its appearance, compete with full streamlined fairing, the equipment includes such goodies as Shimano levers, aluminium wheel rims and a Hyma disc brake to the rear wheel. It would take up so little space in any collection or would make a really potent executive toy for the office. Great fun to ride too!
