The SL, being an abbreviation of Sport Leicht, was largely engineered by the celebrated Daimler Benz boffin, Rudi Uhlenhaut, and was developed from one of the world's most enigmatic cars - the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing. This was the model, which earned for the three-pointed star marque legendary status with second and fourth places on its debut event, the 1952 Mille Miglia.
Very soon, discerning long distance motorists from all over the world wanted an SL of their own and the Stuttgart manufacturer has been obliging them ever since. For the SL Merc has become the most enduring of all the Stuttgart manufacturer's models, with each reincarnation of the type, more of an evolution than a revolution, becoming a classic in its own right.
This 500SL, a right-hand drive roadster, first left the Mercedes-Benz works in 1983 from when it spent the first fifteen years in South Africa where, says the vendor, the two-door was properly maintained to the factory service schedule. We are also told that a new 5-litre engine was fitted around 10,000 miles ago. Although what was claimed to be a comprehensive history file was unfortunately destroyed by a disastrous fire at the owner's premises, the 160,000 kilometres displayed when entered for the sale, equating to 100,000 miles, is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total for this Autobahn stormer from new.
Chassis, two-door body, alloy wheels, gold paintwork and beige leatherette interior are claimed to be all in good condition with 5-litre eight-cylinder engine and automatic transmission as well as electrical equipment also reportedly in good order.
