This 1971-built Ford Mustang 302 convertible, already rallied in Africa, was acquired specifically for the Inca Trail, an endurance event for classics starting in Rio, travelling across the South American continent and taking in the Andes.
UK specialists Mustang Corral had already stripped down and strengthened the bodyshell and carried out a full engine rebuild with Edelbrock and Headman goodies. The gearbox was rebuilt with C4 quick-shift upgrade, a 3.5:1 locker diff and multi-point cage fitted and fuel capacity increased to 36 gallons - the work costing £17,950. Even so, Quick Motorsport of Herefordshire were entrusted to completely rebuild and re-prep the car again for the marathon ahead.
The intrepid crew and their trusty Mustang finished second in class and seventeenth overall out of the Classics - a testament to the inherent strength and reliability of the basic design and standard of preparation. On its return by sea to Tilbury at the beginning of January 2002, the American classic was driven back home to Herefordshire where it has been in storage ever since.
As offered here today, the open US Ford is very much as it finished the epic trip, although the rear springs on both sides have been renewed. Inevitably, after such adventures, the red-painted bodywork and underside does require some attention. However, the tyres are said to be good, the black interior OK and both 5-litre 8-cylinder motor and 3-speed automatic transmission are reportedly in good order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
