From 1953, when the very first TR2 sports cars were delivered, to 1981, when the last TR7 and TR8 models were finally manufactured, this was a very successful, fast-selling, brand of British sports car. In almost every case the cars were simply engineered, and shared their running gear with other cars in the Standard and Triumph ranges, combining brisk performance with good looks and rugged engineering. The first generation of cars - TR2 to TR3B inclusive - were affectionately known as the 'side-screen' cars, and were replaced by a smart Michelotti-styled model, the TR4, in 1961, which featured wind-up windows in the doors, and the options of a removable hardtop, wire-spoke wheels and overdrive transmission. Whereas the TR4 had a 2.1-litre version of the famous 'wet-liner' engine, allied to an all-synchromesh gearbox, it retained a derivative of the earlier chassis frame. The TR4A which took over in 1965, however, had a new chassis with all-independent suspension (a beam rear axle type was still available for USA-sale only) which provided a softer ride. From 1967 the TR5 (TR250 in the USA) used six-cylinder engines, and from 1969 the TR6 was built with a smartly re-styled version of the same body style. The last cars of all were produced in 1976.
The car on offer is an early example of the TR4A, produced in 1965 with the optional overdrive transmission. Exported to Rhodesia, it was purchased there by the vendor in 1971, and was subsequently relocated to South Africa. During the 40 years of his ownership he has had the body shell subjected to a complete bare-metal re-spray and the engine overhauled with new pistons. Repatriated to the UK for the purposes of sale, it has been properly imported with the relevant duties paid. Riding on steel wheels and sporting a hardtop, it is hoped but not guaranteed that this appealing Triumph will possess a fresh MOT certificate by the time of auction.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
