Intended as a direct riposte to the Austin 7, Morris launched its Minor 8HP in 1928. Initially available with a (Wolseley derived) overhead camshaft 847cc, four cylinder engine, a sidevalve unit of the same capacity was introduced in 1931. This later unit not only developed near identical power (its 19bhp being enough to propel the lightweight Minor to nearly 60mph) but also offered the twin advantages of greater reliability and lower cost. With its nimble, leaf-sprung chassis, all round drum brakes and wire wheels, the Minor was a fine handling car as proven by the competition exploits of its MG M-type cousin.
Finished in green over black with green leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "fair / good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim and bodywork (while, he rates the paintwork as "fair"). Prior to entering the current ownership in 2003, the Morris is believed to have undergone a variety of mechanical and electric work. A handwritten note from the previous keeper indicating that he had treated the engine to: "a reground crankshaft, new mains bearings, flushed waterways, fresh hoses, re-metalled conrods and new spark plugs", as well as "an overhauled starter motor and replacement dynamo". The same gentleman is also thought to have paid attention to the Minor's differential, exhaust, rear wheel bearings, tyres and brakes. Upgraded with an isolator switch, electric wiper motor, 6-volt flashing indicators and modern-type grease nipples, this charming `30s Morris Minor possesses a MOT certificate valid until May 2010.
