Lot details Registration No: UAS 991 Chassis No: 60G17130 Mot Expiry: Jun 2004
Percy Riley's famous marque really took off thanks to one model, the Nine, which the Midland firm first displayed at the 1926 Motor Show. The model's main feature was the engine. For when most rivals were still employing sidevalves, Riley's power unit had not one, but two camshafts mounted high up in the cylinder block, driving inclined valves via short pushrods and rockers, and was fitted with hemispherical cylinder heads - a layout which responded well to some further power increasing tweaks.
This Riley special was completed following extensive work carried out during 2001/2 and, according to the vendor, is based on a 1931-built Nine chassis powered by a 1935 12/4 engine. The resultant open car is a do-anything sporting Riley which has been raced and hillclimbed during the 2003 season, achieving a class win at Loton Park in Shropshire for the owner, who tells us that UAS 991 would also be suitable for trials, driving tests and, of course, providing entertaining transport for trips to the pub. Indeed, this characterful machine is only being offered for sale today, he says, to make space for an Edwardian project.
The 1495cc 4-cylinder motor, which has Riley Sprite camshaft timing, twin SUs and a tuned four-branch exhaust manifold with stainless steel silencer, is said to be in good order as is the 4-speed manual gearbox. Electrical equipment is reportedly good, and bodywork painted in British Racing Green and dark brown interior are also in good condition.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
