Introduced in 1972, the W116 was flagship of the contemporary Mercedes-Benz range. A true super saloon it offered unparalleled levels of safety, interior space, handling, performance and ride. Equipped with all round independent suspension (MacPherson strut front, semi-trailing arm rear), disc brakes and power assisted steering, engine sizes varied from a modest 2.8 litre straight six to an extravagant 6.9 litre V8. Though, for many the pick of the range was the 350SE model. Reputedly capable of over 120mph thanks to its potent 3499cc V8 unit, it was notably less nose heavy / thirsty than the Wagnerian 6.9.
Finished in sand with tobacco M-B Tex upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in showroom (interior trim, bodywork, paintwork) or excellent (engine, three-speed automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis, wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly the subject of "nearly £3,000" worth of fettling "since purchase last year", this imposing Mercedes has apparently had its "steering, brakes and suspension rebuilt" as well as being fitted with "all new rubber seals on lights, doors, trunk and sunroof". Further benefiting from a "new Blaupunkt RDS stereo and Mercedes electric aerial", it is said to be "almost as new". Believed but not warranted to have covered just 72,000 miles, it is offered for sale with "lots of history" and MOT certificate valid until May 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
