This is a rare opportunity of aquiring one, of only 10, faithful replicas of a sign issued by MG Motors to their dealerships and garages in the immediate post war period. There are only 2 known surviving originals in the UK, estimated value by the auction houses as £3 K +. These replicas were reviewed by the "Classic & Sportscar" magazine in June 2014 as follows.
" After several years searching for a period MG showroom sign, Rodney Manners decided to fabricate his own. " A generous owner allowed me to measure up his rare original, so that I could make one for my garage," explains long-term MG enthusiast, Manners, who is a retired chartered mechanical engineer."
The sign is fabricated from 18 SWG. mild steel, polyester powder coated in a clear lacquer, giving a grey metallic appearance. The two octagonal MG logos are laser cut to accept the two embosssed red polyester lenses. These are vacuum formed as per the original. The replica signs differ from the original, in that they have a low energy LED lamp instead of an old fashioned tungsten filament bulb. The final touch is assembly with brass set screws throughout, which enhances the patinated appearance.
This example is one of the original prototypes, and has become available following a garage clear out. It has a few minor scratches, and a little superficial rust showing under the lacquer, which adds to the period patinated appearance.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
