Perhaps it is a corollary of the model's understated yet avant garde styling but some thirty-five years on it seems hard to imagine that the R107 series SL and Jaguar E-type Series III were exact contemporaries. Both launched in 1971, they were poles apart in terms of execution and design ethos. Competing head to head in the all-important American market, the R107's refinement, build quality and engineering depth helped sound the death knell for older reactionary designs like the E-type. While, its refusal to age (either externally or internally) led to an impressive eighteen-year lifespan, early examples of the W107 are now truly collectable.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (automatic transmission, interior trim, chassis, bodywork) or "very good" (3500cc SOHC V8 engine, electrical equipment, paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly "imported from the Channel Islands in 2002", 'FRN 62M' is said to have driven just "2,000 miles during the last three years" and to have been garaged when not in use. Believed but not warranted to have covered 105,810 miles from new, it benefits from a "new Toad alarm" which was fitted at a cost of some £200. Riding on steel wheels, this comparatively early R107-SL is offered for sale with "two sets of keys, spare set of wipers", MOT certificate valid until October 10th 2006 and road tax until September 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
