Lot details Registration No: PPD 284 Chassis No: 660567 Mot Expiry: March 2005
The Jaguar XK120 caused a sensation when it first appeared at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. Such was the demand for the new model that the early ash-framed and aluminium-panel clad bodywork had to be re-engineered in more volume-production and more practical steel. Even so, and thanks to the XK overhead camshaft engine, the over 120mph 120 instantly became the world's fastest production motor car.
This XK120, a righthand drive roadster on steel wheels, first left the Browns Lane, Coventry, factory in January 1951, and according to the original log book, was first sold in February of that year to owner number one who was a resident of Farnham, Surrey. This is claimed still to be a matching numbers XK120, which is mighty rare to find after so many years, while the original PPD 284 registration is still in place on the sportscar to this day.
The chassis is said to be very good with good body panels, Old English White English paintwork and beige and brown leather interior. The 3.4-litre 6-cylinder motor is reportedly in very good order, the 4-speed manual gearbox good and the electrical equipment very good. MOT and tax disc are current until next March.
Throughout the boom and bust years, and subsequent recovery in demand of the late 1990s and early 2000s, XK 120s have held up well valuewise, always enjoying rare gilt-edged status. A 120, like this, may not only be a wise punt, but a fun investment too.
