Lot details Registration No: D452ABY Chassis No: WDB1070462A033205 Mot Expiry: June 2007
Launched in 1971, the R107-series SL was beautifully engineered. Notably rigid for a convertible, its two-door monocoque was equipped with all-round independent suspension, power-assisted steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press for its performance and refinement, the 500SL - flagship of the UK range - was unveiled in May 1980. Powered by a 4973cc (240bhp, 299lbft of torque) V8 engine mated to four-speed automatic transmission, it was reputedly capable of 140mph and 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. In production for nine years, the model's fearsome price tag (it cost some £41,700 by 1989) ensured that only 11,817 were dispatched worldwide.
Finished in blue with blue upholstery, this particular example is said to benefit from "good history and service records". Believed but not warranted to have covered some 98,000 miles from new, 'D452 ABY' rides on alloy wheels and boasts both hard- and soft-top roofs. Only being offered for sale due to bereavement, this handsome Mercedes convertible is accompanied by "lots of bills" and a MOT certificate valid until June 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
