Lot details Registration No: OSV 985 Chassis No: 138553 Mot Expiry: None
Intended to complement the six-cylinder Hornet, the four-cylinder Nine joined the Wolseley range for 1934. Based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, the newcomer was powered by a SOHC 1018cc engine allied to four-speed manual transmission. Surprisingly roomy despite its 7ft 9in wheelbase and 3ft 9in track, the `baby' Wolseley was reputedly capable of 59mph. While, the vast majority of Nines were supplied as four-door saloons, London agent Eustace Watkins commissioned a limited number of tourer bodies from coachbuilder Whittingham & Mitchell. Only in production for two seasons, just 7,201 Wolseley Nines are thought to have been made (though, the spilt between open and closed cars is unknown).
Finished in fawn over black with tan upholstery, this particular example has been on static display as part of a private Lake District collection for many years. Although known to have been a tourer since at least August 1962 when its accompanying continuation logbook was issued, there is nothing else on file to indicate whether chassis number 138553 began life as an open or closed car. Stated to have been driven into the collection building under its own power, the Wolseley is presently a non-runner and will require recommissioning prior to road use. Sold strictly as viewed it lacks a current V5C Registration Document (though, an HPi check seems to indicate that the Nine is listed with the DVLA under the registration number `OSV 985').
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
