Lot details Registration No: AKP678B Chassis No: CT37954 Mot Expiry: Sept 2012
Code named 'Zest', the TR4 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the TR3A. Though based on the chassis and drivetrain of its much-loved predecessor it cut a far more modern dash, thanks to an all-new Michelotti-styled body. Power was provided by Triumph's proven OHV four-cylinder engine. The capacity was, however, increased to 2138cc. Other mechanical updates included a wider track front and rear, rack and pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox. The optional overdrive was now made to operate on second and third gears as well as top. There was also the option of a unique hardtop with fixed glass rear window, integral rollbar and removable centre section. A total of 40,253 TR4s were manufactured between 1961 and January 1965.
This fast road/competition 1964 TR4 has remained in the same family since 1977 and covered just 100 miles since it was thoroughly restored using original Stanpart panels and upgraded for considerably superior performance. The impressive engine specification includes: 89mm Omega race pistons; unleaded head with race valves and bronze guides, competition springs and alloy caps; fast road cam and alloy rocker supports; twin Weber carburettors; lumenition ignition and sports coil; Kenlowe fan; uprated oil pump and alloy finned sump; low advance distributor; alternator conversion; harmonic crank damper kit; balanced rotating assembly; race prepared conrods; micro polished crankshaft; lightened flywheel; modified main oil gallery; 4 into 1 stainless steel supersports exhaust manifold and 2.25 inch exhaust. The vendor informs us that this highly potent unit registered 180bhp on Peter Baldwin's rolling road, while other improvements to 'AKP 678B' include: an uprated overdrive gearbox, copper brake pipes, Goodridge brake hoses and an aluminium hardtop. Finished in Green with a Black interior, this tantalising Triumph is now available for a new owner to enjoy.
