Despite its current financial woes, Jaguar possesses an embarrassment of riches when it comes to heritage. Boasting one of the greatest 'back catalogues' in automotive history including such show stoppers as the SS100, XK120, E-type and XJ220, the 'Big Cat' can also claim more Le Mans victories than any manufacturer except Porsche and Ferrari. Yet for many, Jaguar's finest creation was the MK2 of 1959. Based around a four-door monocoque bodyshell equipped with independent front suspension, a 'live' Salisbury back axle and four-wheel disc brakes, it could be had in mild (2.4litre), warm (3.4litre) or hot (3.8litre) varieties - though, even the 'base model' was good for 100mph.
Finished in grey with grey leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres (while, he rates the electrical equipment as "good"). Reportedly owned by a Jaguar enthusiast mechanic for twenty-eight years during which time it received attention to its radiator, dynamo, starter motor, engine bearings (big-end / mains) and clutch, 'YCO 153' is understood to have left his keeping just two and a half years ago. Sporting a stainless steel exhaust and "new chrome wheels with stainless steel spokes", the saloon is believed but not warranted to have covered some 63,000 miles from new (a figure partially supported by nineteen MOT certificates). Further benefiting from "a new headlining and carpets" yet retaining its original leather seats, the MK2 is said to "run, drive and sound absolutely fantastic". Indeed, such is the seller's confidence in 'YCO 153' that he intends to drive it approximately 200 miles to Buxton. Recently submitted to A&M Performance Cars of Snettisham (Norfolk) for an engineer's report (including engine compression test), the car passed with flying colours. Inoperative clock aside, the garage found the Jaguar to be "fault free" and in "first class condition". Although stated to lack "a documented history", this impressive MK2 is offered for sale with the aforementioned A&M Performance Cars report (dated March 14th 2007), MOT certificate valid until March 2008 and historic class (free) road tax until June 2007.
